The package is made up of several lessons that analyze:

  1.  Separation Anxiety is a normal developmental stage for infants and toddlers, but most children have outgrown separation anxiety by about 3 years of age. In some children, separation issues can be a sign of Separation Anxiety Disorder, which can start as early as preschool age (ages 3-6). Separation Anxiety Disorder is a fairly common presenting problem in clinical settings. This training will provide examples of using CBPT with children who present with Separation Anxiety.
  2.  Some fears and worries are typical in children, but persistent or extreme forms of anxiety and fear can interfere with a child’s daily functioning. Children who have been diagnosed with Anxiety Disorders make up a large percentage of the case loads of child therapists. There are many kinds of Anxiety in children including Generalized Anxiety and Phobias.  This training provides multiple examples of using CBPT with children presenting with anxieties and fears and play therapy activities for anxiety.
  3.  Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of the most difficult disorders to treat in young children. This presentation will discuss the gold standard approach of Exposure and Response Prevention (E/RP) as an intervention for OCD. Consideration will be covered of the difficulties of treatment for young children, who often do not have the motivation to work on decreasing their obsessions and compulsions. This module presents examples of using CBPT with children who present with OCD.
  4.  Selective Mutism is a complex childhood disorder that is characterized by a child’s difficult speaking in social situations.  There are multipole ways in which Selective Mutism prsents. Often children with Selective Mutism do not speak at school, or with adults, although a child can meet criteria for Selective Mutism even if he/she speaks in some settings or with certain people. This module will present several cases of Selective Mutism treated with CBPT. The approaches were very different and highlight the various ways that CBPT can be adapted for use with individual children.
  5.  Toileting issues are very common in young children. Most difficulties are resolved without the family seeking treatment for their child. In many situations, if the parents cannot help the child with age-appropriate toileting skills, the parents may seek help from parenting literature, other parents or the child’s pediatrician.  Sometimes, child therapists will be consulted for cases that have not been helped by earlier attempts by the parents. When a child therapist becomes involved, the child is often a bit older (above age 3). Although traditionally, programs to help children with appropriate toileting have often been behavioral management programs implemented by the parents, there are situations where the child’s active involvement in the treatment is important. This module reviews using CBPT for children with toileting issues and presents two different cases that were successfully treated by CBPT.
