The method

We safeguard and evolve the CBPT methodology — the same method we teach everywhere.

Scientific direction & international faculty

Our work is led by Maria A. Geraci, with an international faculty that teaches and researches the method across the world.

Who we are

The CBPT Research Center (Centro Ricerca CBPT) is a research and training institution dedicated to Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy — an evidence-based, structured psychotherapy for children. We advance the method through research, document it in peer-reviewed and APA-published work, and train psychologists and therapists worldwide to apply it. Our mission is to help children through a method that works, and to accompany professionals in bringing Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy into their clinical practice. The Center operates under the direction of Maria A. Geraci, Ph.D., and is a global reference for the method.

About CBPT and the Center

We are a group of Italian and American scholars studying Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques and Play Therapy during child development. Our goal is to promote Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy (CBPT) through the integration of these themes and research areas.

CBPT derives from several cognitive-behavioral theories (CBT), originally conceived for adults. Dr. Susan Knell (1993) developed the approach by modifying adult CBT principles for children and combining CBT techniques with play therapy — pairing play with adaptive thoughts and behaviors to help children develop effective coping strategies.

Under Maria A. Geraci’s leadership, the CBPT Research Center strives to advance global training and research on Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy.
